Heijmans installs flat cable at the Water Board in ‘no time’

The application of new techniques means that there are more and more opportunities to make office buildings future-proof in a sustainable way. This also applies to the renovation and refurbishment of the Water Board office Hoogheemraadschap de Stichtse Rijnlanden, in Houten. Heijmans Utiliteit was appointed the main contractor for the construction and electrical and mechanical installations. Robert van Brederode, planning engineer at Heijmans, explains: ‘This office was built in 1997. The Water Board’s decision to renovate the building was born from a need to improve facilities and installations and the introduction of a flexible concept. This requires changing the arrangement of the building, and a lot of glass walls will be used, creating a less private environment.’

Virtually error-free installation
One of the changes is that the building of the Water Board will have a new building management system. The corresponding connections are realised using prefab flat cable, which Eleqtron had already provided with connections at the correct location of the cable. Robert van Brederode: ‘Henk Pielman of Eleqtron advised me on this. We decided to use a five-pole version of the flat cable, with one wire for the power supply of the building management system and 2 wires for the power supply of the blinds. Another major advantage was that the flat cable was installed in no time. And we are talking about the installation of approximately 350 metres of flat cable, done in two days by three workers. We only needed to click the cable onto the rails. This went flawlessly and everything was delivered neatly prefabricated. I think working with flat cable is an excellent option for construction. It guarantees virtually flawless installation. In my opinion, the level of expert knowledge in construction is declining. The use of flat cable, which is simple, provides a perfect solution for this.’

Other smart solutions
In consultation with Henk Pielman, Robert van Brederode and his colleague William van Bronkhorst came out with other clever, pluggable solutions. ‘We used Qneqt presence detectors that are equipped with a relay for switching the lighting to 230V, including an extra contact for controlling the controller for the building management system. And at Eleqtron I found a handy, pluggable distributor that is unique in the market (the Q-T plug, editors). We used this when connecting the detector to the lighting, with the 2-pole signal to the controller of the building management system. The compatibility with other pluggable brands went smoothly. Henk substantiated this claim with test certificates that guarantee the connections.’
